Hello. Good morning. Today when I got up, I was wondering if you have ever heard about one really very special award which is given to some … really special individuals on April's Fools Day. Do you know what is that? It is Darwin Awards. I remember when I heard about that for the first time from my teacher at secondary school, she told us it was given to a a man … or probably a group of men and they … one day decided to save one hen. They saw, of course, that the hen fell into the well, of course, the hen is still alive down on the water. So one man went down to save the hen – I am not sure if they used any rope … but actually the man drowned. Then there came another man, probably to save the man, and also drowned. Actually I have heard about three men drowned and the hen was still alive.
So probably you already can guess that this award is given as some macabre tribute to the human stupidity. It is given to people who almost died or actually, unfortunately, really died during this event – I think during the action they were doing. Yeah, so it really made me surprised what people are actually capable of doing. Yeah, you know. It is really .. it is fun but partly it is not because these people have really severe injuries or, unfortunately, really died during this event. So it is really about some unfortunate accidents. For example, I can remember a case when one young boy bet that he can actually swallow alive fish. The fish was quite big, I don't remember exactly, but actually he chocked! He chocked to his death with the fish! Can you imagine that? It is horrible death.
Or there was a man who was selling a flat I believe and he tried to persuade the people, the potential buyers, that the glass, the windows are really flawless, and so he actually jumped against them, and it didn't make and he fell through but, unfortunately, it was the tenth... the fifteenth floor and he died, unfortunately. Actually, he was right. The glass was really flawless, unfortunately. But the frame did not make it. So that's really horrible.
And one case also from the Czech Republic. Actually, I can remember that from TV. It is probably 10, 15 years back, it is long time. In a city somewhere very near to Prague a group of men used to go to some old abandoned factory building and they were stealing steel probably to sell it for money, of course. And they were trying to steal everything. It was already empty so they tried also to steal the steel from the walls and , unfortunately, one night it fell on them. I think that group had five, six members and 3, 4 died there.. some survived.
So we were also nominated for this award. Unfortunately, we didn't win. It is really strange humour, you know but it exists and people are nominated and the winner announced on the April's Fools Day every year. So if you are interested, you can find it on the Internet. There exists even a video, or a movie actually with a lot of events like that so you can have a good fun watching. Bye
