CONDITIONALS

  0. conditional

- used for general knowledge (physics, geology, chemistry etc.)

If .. přítomný čas, přítomný čas

If you heat chocolate it melts.

What do you do if you get a headache?

1. conditional

- a real condition in the present (or future), feasible condition

- If .. přítomný čas, ..will + infinitive ( instead of will there can be used: must, may, can or imperative)

If I have time, I will come.

What will you do if she doesn´t come?

2. conditional

- unreal condition (in the present and future), at the present unfeasible condition

If .. minulý čas, .. would .. infinitive (instead of would we can use could or might)

If I had time, I would come.

In conditionals there is every time used were instead of was! The same rule is used also at wish clauses.

If I were you, I wouldn't do it.

If he were (=was) here, everything would be perfect.

Rozdíl mezi 1. a 2. kondicionálem:

If I become a president, I will.... = it means that you are a candidate and you have a real chance of becoming one.

If I became a president, I would... = it means that you are not a candidate and have no real or even probable chance of becoming a president. It is just a dream.

 3. conditional

- is used for something that happened in the past and we cannot change it. It is only about the past! It is usually also connected with regrets.

- If .. past perfect , .. would + past participle (instead of would we can use could, might)

If I had had your address, I would have sent you a postcard.

 1. hint.: We do not use comma in front of if, it is in the second part of the sentence.

If I have time, I will call you and help you.

I will call you and help you if I have time.

2. hint.: The conjunction IF can be replaced by other conjunctions with the same meaning.

If = In case (of)  ( used only in the present)

            If  not = Unless

            If = Providing
