Modals with past participle

 

 This is another way how to express past tense of verbs (without changing of meaning).

Past with modal verb

Past (common way)

I can / could have gone.

I could go. (I was able to go.)

I may have gone.

I was allowed to go.

I might have gone.

I was allowed to go.

I must have gone.

I had to go.

I should have gone.

I ought to have gone.

-

I need have gone.

- (I had to go.)

  

Other ways of expressing modals verbs:

 

can      -           be able to        -           manage to, succeed in, be capable of

may     -           be allowed to  -           be permitted to, be forbidden to,  be prohibited

must    -           have to            -           be obliged to
