Comparatives

·         -er – used for monosyllabic and disyllabic adjectives

          Exceptions:

o   Ending –e, we put only –r

§  large – larger – the largest

o   Ending –y after consonant, changes to –i

§  busy – busier – the busiest

o If the word is monosyllabic and from the end it is consonant, vowel, consonant the last letter must make double consonant

§  big – bigger – the biggest

·         more – used for disyllabic and more syllabic adjectives

          Exception:

o   kIf disyllabic adjectives end -ed, -ing, -ful, there is used only more (the most) but never –er  (–est)

§  boring – more boring – the most boring


Superlatives

·         -est – used for monosyllabic and disyllabic adjectives

·         the most – used for disyllabic and more syllabic adjectives

o   I am as tall as my sister.

o   She is so clever as her best friend.

o   We are as intelligent as our boss.

11.2.  comparatives - than

o   She is more boring than the most of my friends.

o   We are busier than we were last year.

o   The tickets are cheaper than I thought.

11.3.  comparatives - určení z nějakého celku

o   Her daughter is the most beautiful of all girls from her class.

o   Their idea is the best of all.

o   This dress is the cheapest of all in the shop.
