SO DO I & NEITHER DO I
So do I, Neither do I - It is agreement to the previously said sentence. We have to remember that we use both expressions as agreement! The difference is in the previous sentence - if the original sentence is positive, we use for agreement "So do I". When there is negative sentence, we use for agreement "Neither do I".
Agreement:
+ sentence. + So do I
- negative. – Neither do I.
Do I – can be replaced according to the previous sentence:
He is all right. So is she.
He is not here. Neither is she.
Examples:
„We weren’t very happy with the results.“ „Neither was I.“
„I can stand on my head.“ „ So can he.“
„I didn’t have enough money.“ „ Neither did we.“
„Samantha has to practise the piano every day.“ „So do they.“
„I had to work very hard yesterday.“ „ So did we.“
„Tom may go to Prague tomorrow evening.“ „So may she.“
„I haven’t had anything to eat all day.“ „Neither has he.“
„I have never seen Star Wars.“ „Neither have I.“
„I won’t speak to her again.“ „Neither will they.“
Disagreement:
I do not like fish. - But I do!
She did not play the piano. - But I did!
- we make disagreement easily from the first sentence .
